Why You Need a Healthy Liver
De-toxify your liver. And your thinking.
A vast amount of chemicals are now in everyday use and all of these must be processed
and neutralized by the liver. These chemicals come in the form of household cleaning
products, cosmetic and personal care products and household furnishings and building
materials. While alcohol has long been associated with cirrhosis of the liver, it
is not the only cause, but its consumption/overuse certainly exacts a precious toll.
In addition to poor nutrition and genetic predispositions, an over-reliance on pharmaceuticals
and environmental factors combine to suppress liver functioning, which means it
can’t do what we desperately need it to do:
- Detoxify potentially toxic chemicals from both inside and outside of the body including
drugs, alcohol and toxins from intestinal microbes. Biologically, this is accomplished
with antioxidant nutrients and enzymes such as glutathione.
- Store sugar as 'glycogen' and regulate blood sugar.
- Produce and store proteins and regulate substances involved in protein metabolism.
- Produce bile for the digestion of fats.
- Produce blood proteins, clotting factors and other substances required to make red
blood cells (erythrocytes).
- Regulate a number of hormones.
- Neutralize 'free-radicals' by antioxidants. Free radicals are highly reactive oxygen
molecules that can damage tissues.
- Store vitamins, chiefly A, D and B12
